We at AIRDEX believe we have the most environmental friendly pallet in the world. Our focus in the development, marketing and logistical deployment of our product is to insure we maximize the environmental benefits of using our pallet.
CO2 Emission Reductions - AIRDEX Pallets Compared to Wood Pallets
The AIRDEX pallet is targeted for international air freight usage. It weighs about 8 pounds compared to 40 pounds for an average wood pallet typically used for international air freight shipments. The more than 30-pound difference between the two pallets will achieve the following CO2 Emission reductions:
1. 10,000 AIRDEX pallets shipped each month from Shanghai to Luxembourg would produce 1,800,000 pounds less CO2 per month, compared to shipments using heavier wood pallets. (source: zerocarbonnow.org using the UK’s Department of Environment figures for CO2 emissions by weight on long haul flights)
2. Wood pallets put into landfills each emit 1 pound of CO2 per 1 pound of waste weight. While there is a very small carbon footprint inherent in the manufacturing process, the AIRDEX pallet emits ZERO CO2 in a landfill, compared to a 40-pound wood pallet emitting 40 pounds of CO2!
Here's how YOU benefit:
- This pallet is reparable with a simple patch system available from AIRDEX.
- 100% Recycle-ability is available through AIRDEX world-wide recycling network.
- Will not sustain bug migration or infestation between countries.
- Replaces wood pallets, which claim nearly 50% of old growth forestry harvests annually.
- Creates more efficiency and reduces losses in global logistics.
ISPM-15 Compliance
Under this United Nations regulation, all "first-world" nations have agreed to restrict the use of wood products in international trade (import-export) in a combined effort to reduce infestation of boring beetles, aphids and other potentially destructive insects. The AIRDEX pallet represents a 100% guarantee of compliance with this environmentally protective initiative by providing a pallet that contains no food sources or natural habitat for these or any other insects. The full-jacketed super coating used by AIRDEX also has no cracks, crevices, or nesting areas for insects and is fully washable.
Current Status for Re-Use of AIRDEX Pallet Material
AIRDEX currently recycles 75% of its pallet into *medium impact polystyrene that is being sold in Europe for new product usage.
AIRDEX is re-selling 25% of the “once used” pallets received. AIRDEX estimates that 60-70% or the pallets re-sold are eventually recycled at an EPS recycling center.
Future Plans for the Recycling of AIRDEX Pallet Material
AIRDEX has entered into an exclusive partnership with Timbron International in order to employ recycled AIRDEX pallets for re-use in molded construction products for various custom applications. With this partnership, AIRDEX will have an exclusive relationship to recycle 100% of our once-used pallets.
AIRDEX is developing recycling methods for converting used AIRDEX pallets into High Impact Polystyrene Resins to be returned to China for producing new AIRDEX pallets.
Environmental Benefits of EPS Raw Material Used in AIRDEX Pallets
Extremely Safe
EPS is non–toxic and totally inert. It contains no Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) or Hydrofluorocarbons (HCFC’s), and never has at any time during its life-cycle. It’s also totally absent of any nutritional value, so no fungi or msicro-organisms can grow with EPS. Additionally, the AIRDEX AIRpalletTM does not absorb liquids that can promote bacterial growth, and does not require the extensive chemical insecticidal treatment typically required with wood pallet use.
Because EPS doesn’t decompose in a landfill, it doesn’t release any methane emissions into the air, and because it is inert, non-toxic and stable; it won’t contaminate subterranean water supplies.
Recyclable
EPS can be recycled in many ways once it comes to the end of its life. This includes recycling directly into new building products and commercial incineration to recover its inherent energy content. Each kg. of EPS has 1.3 liters of liquid fuel which makes it ideal for commercial incineration. The appropriate choice of a recycling method is based on technical environmental and economic considerations.
Health Aspects
EPS presents no dangers to health in installation and use. EPS doesn’t scratch your hands nor does it irritate your skin or mucous membranes. Labor laws do not require gloves or masks to work with such a soft yet solid material. EPS is biologically inert and doesn’t produce any pathogenic dust, even in the long term. Thus EPS is safe for both shippers and end-users. EPS pallets are worker safe since there are no splinters, nails and sharp edges to injure workers.
